Joyce

Yes- the old saying that what sells is the sizzle not the steak. Packaging is everything so you may need to re-think your marketing strategy. Just like in selling a house. It has to look really good and be presented well. The house might be great but if it doesn't present well it won't sell - well maybe if its real cheap! haha

Hi Kaya, I enjoyed chatting live with you the other day- sorry we had to go. I thought with my idea and premise for our custom jewelry business- and Janusz's expertise as a fine jewelry designer and "old world craftsman"- that we would be beating people away at the door. But bringing real fine custom jewelry to people at prices stripped from the tremendous mark up that jewelry stores add- seems to be a tough sell to some people. They would rather have the "little blue box" rather than the same high quality, without all the mark up...Some people get it and we have some business- just didn't think that I would still, after three years, still need to be telling people about us. And believe me, I am not shy! So, I am reaching out of the box and stepping out of my comfort zone- and using the computer- that I used to hate so much to try and tell everyone about us.

Absolutely I agree. Shyness is all about self-confidence. What is the root of lack of self confidence? It could be that the root is self-concept or not valuing oneself and thinking that what they have to say will not be valued. The only reason I mentioned introverts is because some people mix up shyness with being introverted and I agree that some introverted people are powerful at putting themselves forward.

Very extroverted people can also be shy. I know someone like this. He is so good at presenting in groups and teaching and has such a strong charisma that people don't realize he is actually very shy. His shyness comes from self judgment and not feeling ok about himself. People are often shocked when he shares this because it is hidden when he is in groups.

Thanks for the great conversation Patricia. I am enjoying chatting with you.

Kaya shy is different from introvert.

You can be shy whether you tend toward extroversion or introversion. I think shyness has more to do with self-confidence in the situation rather than self concept or value. For example, we can have a positive view of our worth but lack the confidence to carry on or initiate a conversation.

Does that make sense?

Patricia

Yes- you are right on target! If there is no cash flow there is no business. When people are stressed financially they are constricted and not as generous or giving as well.

I think shyness has to do with self concept or self value. I know many introverted people who are excellent entrepreneurs but shyness is almost a fear of putting oneself forward. What do you think?

My finding over the years is that people go into business THINKING because of their expertise they will be successful. Hopefully sooner than later they realize, that someone still has to buy what they are selling. I don't think this is because of shyness as much as maybe reluctance but more so, just lack of understanding that - nothing happens to grow your business until someone buys and that means, you have to have sales and marketing in place. That's part of being a good business owner.

Patricia

Thanks for your encouraging agreement. I think one issue is that many people begin their business because of their product or service so they are essentially good technicians. The important thing is to become good business owners. Do you think that people's shyness or reluctance comes into play?

Your statistics are encouraging in knowing that microbusinesses are a powerfully large group. I'm in total agreement that to become more prosperous we would have a greater and more positive affect worldwide. I believe now is the right time for all those to grow and be more prosperous.
